About Me

deborahs wood sculptures
After leaving school in 1980 I attended art college for 3 years at Seven Hills Brisbane. Where I Got a Diploma in Art Majoring in Graphic Design. After 10 years I was married with 2 children so left work to take care of the family, during this time, I was tutored in carving sculpture for 2 years by Donald Powell, a Churchill Scholarship grantee. After learning the basics I pushed myself with more challenging projects. After attempting carving my first human face. I couldn't go back to carving animals. I got stuck on the human form. I was drawn to carving dancers because they have such toned and well developed bodies. To me the dancers can make such beautiful forms with the way they pose their bodies. It just inspires me to try and recreate the beauty, the symmetry and capture the motion. Wood also has a beauty of it's own, your never sure how the grain is going to come out of the piece. I like to take a block of wood and create beauty in the form of a human being.
